Module Description: This module provides students with an understanding of the principles and processes which are involved in the production of grass and food crops and the breeding and production of animals for food.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Describe the production of grass and forage crops and the provision of year round animal feed on Irish farms.
LO2 Describe the major plant crops grown in Ireland and their cultivation, production and hearvesting.
LO3 Outline the production practices involved in the breeding, rearing and finishing of the food animal species grown in Ireland.
LO4 Describe the production of milk on dairy farms.
LO5 Outline the pathology of major plant and animal diseases and describe how these may be managed and controlled.

Grass Production
Soil profiles, nutrients, fertilisers. Grass sowing, nutrition, harvesting and preservation.
Crop production
The planning, production and harvesting of food crops such as cereals, fruits and vegetables.
Animal Production
The production of food animals: Cattle; Sheep; Pigs; Poultry and other species. The production of horses. Animal Welfare. Traceability.
Dairy Herd management
The dairy enterprise. Dairy herd management. Animal welfare. Traceability
Plant and Animal Diseases.
Major plant and animal diseases. Causative agents of infectious diseases. metabolic diseases. Pests and Parasites. Control and management of diseases. Animal remedies and plant protection products.
