Module Description: This module intoduces students to the various aspects involved in the design and construction of Hip & Valley Roofing on a square and off-square plan.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Apply safe working practices with tools, equipment and disposal methods when dealing with materials.
LO2 Set out and mark out a model hip and valley roof including a cutting list.
LO3 Cut and construct a model roof containing hip, valley, common rafter, jack rafter and purlin.
LO4 Use a roofing square in the marking and measurement of rafters in a roof with varying pitches.
LO5 Apply and construct a new roof is connected to an existing roof.

Indicative Content
Safety
Safe working practice in relation to tool and machine operation in roof construction including a Safe System of Work Plan (SSWP).
Construction
Design, develop, cut and construct a Hip & Valley roof. Demonstrating the annexing of old to new roof surfaces.
Materials
Natural Softwood Planed All Over (PAO), plywoods, oriented stand board and breathable membranes, simulated flashing material.
Design
Using geometric principles design and draw a Hip & Valley roof.
Skills
Determination of bevels and lengths, cutting to bevels and lengths, fixing, nailing roof components
