Module Description: The module introduces students to fundamental principles of basic roof design incorporating a flat roof dormer.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Draw and develop the component rafters required to construct an 'A' frame roof from a plan with due regard for workshop health and safety.
LO2 Apply a range of skills in roof design and triangulation that includes dormer flat roof construction.
LO3 Display geometric principles and procedures involving bevels and forces found in basic roofing.
LO4 Display safe working practices when dealing with materials and equipment.
LO5 Complete a model of an 'A' frame roof with the relevant bracing and external sheeting.

Indicative Content
Workshop Practice
Conduct a Risk Assessment and use safe practice in the construction of Timber Cut Roofs.
Construction
Cut and construct a model roof incorporating a dormer, the model roof should contain common rafters, jack rafters and purlin.
Materials
Natural Softwood PAO
Design
Based on Geometric Principles set out a model roof and write a cutting list.
Skills
Determination of bevels and lengths, cutting to bevels and lengths, fixing, nailing roof components.
