Distinguish and detail the types of foundation suitable for residential/commercial buildings. |

Explain different wall types that envelop a building. |

Develop a set of working drawings that detail timber framed methodologies. |
LO5 |
Differentiate between traditional and prefabricated roofing forms. |
LO6 |
Describe the elements that constitute the external building fabric with regard to the environmental impact and sustainable design. |

Indicative Content |
Building fabric
Types of buildings: residential, commercial/industrial and multi-storey. Modern methods of construction with regard to environmental impact. Foundations, and foundations failure, soil conditions, walls and finishes.

Timber buildings and structures
Timber framed buildings, contemporary and engineered wood solutions. Case studies of national and international best practice.

Roofing Technology
Dormer roofs, flat roof, pitched eyebrow, roof lights, structural detailing, weathering, rot prevention, types of cladding, coverings and preservation.
Roof Trusses (Mid to Large spans) design principles and jointing methods, handling, lifting and installation. Health and safety required in roof truss installation.
