Module Description: This module introduces students to the process of setting out, jointing and assembling closed and cut string stairs. The module incorporates newel posts and handrail.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Identify correct jointing methods for assembling the different stair components.
LO2 Prepare a working drawing incorporating jointing techniques and moulding detailing.
LO3 Measure and outline material shape and size requirements for the various stair sections.
LO4 Execute to a high finish and tolerance the sawing, chiselling assembly and fitting requirements
LO5 Apply safe working practices with tools and machinery during all workshop operations.
LO6 Set out and make a stairs incorporating winders in compliance with the building regulations.

Indicative Content
Workshop Practice
Conduct a Risk Assessment and use safe working practice in relation to tool and machine operation (portable router, biscuit jointer, jig saw, lathe).
Construction
Marking out, Sawing square in both vertical and horizontal planes. Morticing, chiselling fitting, assembly (squaring, twist prevention, gluing and wedging) and finishing.
Materials
Natural softwood PAO manufactured boards (facilitation of glass and composite materials).
Jointing
Single, double and barefaced mortise and tenoning. Housed wedged and dovetailing. Thread bracketing with return nosing.
Setting Out
Preparation of working drawing and setting out boards in accordance with building regulations. Domestic and public stair requirements regarding pitch, rise and going. Transferring joint detailing to materials.
