Module Description: This module offers students an introduction to the study of Thermodynamics and fluid mechanics. It covers heat energy and transfer, thermal and linear expansion, pressure of gasses and liquids, relative density of gasses and liquids, corrosion, properties of oils and gasses.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Manipulate formulae and the SI system of units as applied to Thermodynamics of fluids and gases.
LO2 Complete calculations involving heat, thermal expansion, expansion , compression of fluids and gases.
LO3 Define properties of fluids and calculate pressures, hydrostatic forces.
LO4 Work in the lab as a part of a team doing various testing procedures, producing results and reports.

Mensuration
Practical problems on area, Volume, Capacity, Density and Weight of Liquids and Gases
Units and Conversions
The SI system of units, prefixes and usage
Pressures
Intensity of Pressure, Total Pressure, Force, Circulating Pressure, Pressure Drop, and Hydraulic Gradient, Measurement, Boyle's Law, Atmospheric Pressure, Gauge Pressure.
Properties of Materials
Mechanical properties of the various materials used in Mechanical Services.
Electrical Power
Heat Energy, Power, Current, Continuity, Single Phase, 3 Phase supply, DC/AC current.
Temperature
Temperature Measurement, Scales, Thermal and Linear expansion, Specific heat and Heat quantity, Heat Transfer, Latent and Sensible Heat, Change of state.
Corrosion
Atmospheric, Electrolytic, De-zincification of fittings, Acidic water, PH Scale, Glycol.
Latent Heat and Vapourisation
Change of state. Latent heat of fusion and vapourisation. Evaporation, condensation and boiling. Vapour pressure. Enthalpy, formation and properties of steam, wet steam, dry steam, super heated steam, and Steam tables. Temperature-enthalpy diagram.
Lab Programme
Lab Safety, Conduct Lab experiments from the following list: Thermal/Linear expansion, Thermal conductivity, Density, Intensity of Pressure, Properties of materials, Latent and sensible heat.
