Module Description: This is a theoretical and practical course that introduces the student to the practical elements of ships' operations. It gives students the basic seamanship skills to allow them to assist in the following operations: anchoring and mooring, in-port watch keeping, working safely on deck, maintenance requirements and other shipboard routines, including personal safety and responsibility.

Indicative Content
Nautical Knots, bends and hitches
Nautical Terminology. Cordage. Types of rope. Use and care of rope. Characteristics of ropes. Nautical knots, bends and hitches and their use onboard ship. Whipping. Splicing. Rope and wire stoppers. Rigging bos'n's chair and stage hitch.
Port operations
Procedures relating to maintaining a deck watch in port. Preparation of holds to receive cargo. Alarms and communication equipment. Sounding of tanks and bilges. Prevention of pollution during cargo operations. Hatches and watertightness. Securing the Vessel for sea.
Mooring and Anchoring
Mooring and anchoring equipment. Mooring and anchoring operation procedures. Precautions while mooring and anchoring. Use of Tugs.
Means of Access
Gangways. Accommodation Ladders. Pilot Ladders. Other approved means of access/egress. Required safety equipment.
Safe working practices
Relevant sections of Marine Notices. Code of Safe Working Practices for Merchant Seamen. Maintenance equipment. Safety precautions while working onboard. Guidelines relating to safe working practices and safe movement aboard ship. Working at a height or over side. Personal Protective equipment and clothing. Risk assessment. Permit to work procedures.
Maintain steelwork and deck equipment
Identification and application of paints. Paint types and uses. Preparation of surfaces. Identification of work area, tools and materials. Safe use and stowage of materials.
Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities
Types of emergencies and actions to take. Emergency signals and use of safety equipment. Value of drills and training. Importance of safe working practices. Effective communication. Precautions on entering enclosed spaces. Use of Lock-out/Tag-out system. Pollution prevention. Drug and alcohol policy. Employee relations.
