This module is designed to give the student a practical knowledge of the modern motor vehicle in terms of the operation of the internal combustion engine and its primary sub-systems.It will also introduce the student to basic engineering workshop fabrication processes.

LO1 |
Conform to all safety regulations in a workshop/garage environment. |
LO2 |
Use a range of tools & automotive test equipment to disassemble, measure, record, diagnose and re-assemble an internal combustion engine. |
LO3 |
Identify and list the basic operating principles if an internal combustion engine, identify engine components, related engine subsystems and their functions. |
LO4 |
Identify, inspect and replace various engine components in accordance with manufactures recomendations. |
LO5 |
Fabricate a metal component with the use of technical drawings and workshop equipment. |

Safety regulations,
All aspects of safety which relate to automotive and metal fabrication workshops.

Engine component locations and technical data
Engine components and location, engine identification, technical content and manufacturers technical guidelines.
|
Engine construction & operation
Four stroke cycle petrol/diesel, two stroke cycle petrol/diesel, firing orders, valve mechanisms, camshafts, cylinder head design & operation, cylinder block design & operation, crankshaft layout, engine timing, engine disassembely and assembely.

Cooling System.
Water-pumps, thermostat, cooling radiator electric cooling fan & associated sensors.
|
Engine diagnostics
Wear detection, technical report, compression testing, cylinder leakage testing, measurements, wear mitigation and overhaul techniques.

Engine lubrication system
Engine lubrication system: oil screening /filtration, oil pumps, oil galleries.

Introductory metal fabrication workshop skills
Use of the basic cutting tools, marking, measuring, cutting, use of files, saws, drills, screw thread cutting dies and taps. Basic metal turning and surface finishing of work-pieces.
