Module Details

Module Code: CHEP8013
Title: Product Design
Long Title: Product Design
NFQ Level: Advanced
Valid From: Semester 1 - 2016/17 ( September 2016 )
Duration: 1 Semester
Credits: 5
Field of Study: 5240 - Chemical & Process Eng
Module Delivered in: 2 programme(s)
Module Description: In this module students will produce a concept for a product, learning to work effectively as part of a team. Each team will develop their own product concept using the Stanford dSchool Design Thinking approach. The Stage Gate Product Design Process will then be applied to deliver a refined product concept from a business and technical perspective.

Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
# Learning Outcome Description
LO1 Operate effectively in a team and apply strategies to enhance the performance of their team
LO2 Apply Design Thinking to develop a product concept
LO3 Refine an original product concept using the Stage Gate Product Development Process
LO4 Prepare a business plan for their superior product concept
LO5 Conduct a gate review of another team's product idea and participate in the presentation of the business and technical case for their team's product concept to a team acting as their gate reviewers

Module Recommendations

This is prior learning (or a practical skill) that is strongly recommended before enrolment in this module. You may enrol in this module if you have not acquired the recommended learning but you will have considerable difficulty in passing (i.e. achieving the learning outcomes of) the module. While the prior learning is expressed as named MTU module(s) it also allows for learning (in another module or modules) which is equivalent to the learning specified in the named module(s).

Incompatible Modules
These are modules which have learning outcomes that are too similar to the learning outcomes of this module. You may not earn additional credit for the same learning and therefore you may not enrol in this module if you have successfully completed any modules in the incompatible list.
No incompatible modules listed
Co-requisite Modules

Requirements

This is prior learning (or a practical skill) that is mandatory before enrolment in this module is allowed. You may not enrol on this module if you have not acquired the learning specified in this section.

No requirements listed

Indicative Content
Building and running a successful team
Personalities, positive and negative behaviours within a team, active listening, generating a skills bank, developing a productive team, role of team leader, role of team member, evaluating the level of team development, adopting a proactive approach to accomplish desired objective. Agendas, minutes of meetings, gantt charts.
Design Thinking
Human-centred design: empathy for design, define, ideate, prototype and test. Using the resources and methods of the Stanford dSchool.
Stage Gate Product Development Process (SGPDP)
General overview of SGPDP: Opportunity Assessments – market analysis, value proposition, market segmentation, value chain analysis, competitive analysis, technological challenges. Customer requirements – customer surveys, determine fitness-to-standard (FTS) and new-unique-and-difficult (NUD) requirements. Technical requirements - translation of customer requirements into technical requirements. Critical-to-quality variables (CTQs) – Usually NUDs taken as CTQ variables, assemble first house of quality. Superior product concepts – identification of possible solution concepts, use of Pugh matrix for screening purposes to find superior concept.
Gate Review
Agenda for a gate review, role of the gate reviewers, criteria used to assess a product idea at the concept stage of the stage gate process.
