Module Description: |
The student will learn about the role of the engineer within the engineering profession and within society. The position and responsibilities of the engineer, particularly related to ethics and sustainability will be explored. Communication with the engineering profession and society at large will be emphasised. It will also include an introduction to the skills required for the Work Placement module.

Ethics in engineering
The application of ethical theories and awareness to the engineering profession. Responsibility to Society. Duty of care. Legal duties of the engineer. Safety and risk analysis. Responsibility for safety in design. Study of engineering case studies. Codes of ethics.

Sustainability in engineering
Climate change resilience and engineering design. Issues of sustainability in the built environment. Carbon emissions. International agreements.

Building regulatory and planning process
Building control legislation, key regulatory guidance, planning procedures, documentation, permission, retention, exemptions, appeals and environmental imapct assessments.
