Module Description: This module for International students is to build competence in the general field of spoken academic discourse,transferable across disciplines and settings, but with an emphasis on business topics. There will be an opportunity to practise giving different forms of academic presentations used in English-medium institutions.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Demonstrate understanding of the structure and development of academic presentations
LO2 Prepare and deliver an effective academic presentation in his/her specialist field
LO3 Participate in a range of interactional settings such as seminars, tutorials, group discussions, debates, etc.
LO4 Formulate ideas with precision and produce clear, detailed oral descriptions of complex topics, integrating subthemes, developing particular points and rounding off with an appropriate conclusion
LO5 Respond to extended speech, even when delivered at fast native speed.

Linguistic Styles
Identifying one's own style and analysing the styles of other effective presenters; recognising cultural influences on speaking style. Awareness of language registers
Pronunciation
How it can be improved to enhance presentation quality. Exposure to a variety of English accents from around the world
Filming and evaluation of presentations
Exposure to videos of effective presenters and presentation styles; filming of students' own trial presentations will be assessed using auto-critique and peer-evaluation
Evolution of the Art of Public Speaking
Content and delivery considerations; examining narrative structures; conveying visual information; attitude and body language
