Module Description: This module introduces the student to the German-speaking regions(Germany, Switzerland and Austria), their people and some of their customs. It also introduces the student to the sounds of German, and includes some basic phrases.

This module commences at level A1.1 (beginner's level) as described in the Common European Framework of Reference for language proficiency.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

Indicative Content
German Cultural Studies
The geography of Switzerland, Germany and Austria. The 16 Bundesländer in Germany; neighbouring countries; daily life in Germany, Switzerland and Austria. Project topic: Research and write about a German 'Bundesland' and a city within it; research and write about a region of Austria and a city within that region; research and write about a German-speaking region of Switzerland and a city within that region.
Listening Skills
Basic classroom interaction (e.g. comprehending questions about yourself and your family); audio materials; film materials; CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning) programmes
Speaking Skills
Classroom interaction (paired and group role-playing); CALL interactive programmes.
Writing skills
Writing the German alphabet; writing short, basic statements and questions.
Reading Skills
Reading short, basic paragraphs in German, e.g. paragraphs about people’s daily lives, short adverts or menus.
Grammar
Areas of grammar covered for listening, speaking, writing and reading skills include: present tense forms (regular verbs only) for ich/du/er/sie/es/wir/Sie/sie; how to form questions; definite and indefinite articles; personal pronouns; negation.
