On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

Indicative Content
Business Mathematics
Order of operations. Fractions, decimals, percentages, ratio, indices. Approximation. Applications to the business context such as Percentage increase/decrease, profit/loss. Break even analysis. Currency Conversion. Simple Index and Chain Index Numbers. Inflation. Compound interest and depreciation.
Fundamentals of Algebra and Functions
Variables. Simplification and evaluation of algebraic expressions, including examples from the business domain. Transposition of formulae. Solution of equations. Function notation. Graphing of elementary functions.
Introduction to Logic
Propositions, logical connectives, truth tables. Compound propositions, logical equivalence, laws of logic including De Morgan’s Laws. Introduction to rules of inference and valid arguments.
Descriptive Statistics
Data collection, organisation, and analysis. Primary and secondary data. Qualitative and quantitative data. Ordinal and non-ordinal data. Frequency Tables and Distributions. Visualisation - bar charts, stem and leaf, histograms, ogives.
Summary Statistics
Summary Statistics Measures of central tendency - mean, mode, median. Measures of spread - range, interquartile range, standard deviation. Skewness. Kurtosis. Measures of location to include mean, median and mode. Measures of dispersion to include range, interquartile range, mean and standard deviation.
Mathematics and Statistics Laboratory Programme
Use of appropriate software packages (Geogebra, Wolfram Alpha, Excel) to support theory.
