Module Description: The objective is to study the metabolism of Nitrogen-containing compounds and the metabolism of complex lipids.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Describe and illustrate the metabolic pathways of purine, pyrimidine and amino acid metabolism
LO2 Describe and illustrate the enzymology of nitrogen fixation
LO3 Describe and illustrate the Biochemistry of the polypeptide and steroid hormones
LO4 Illustrate the structure of principal nucleotides and their functions
LO5 Discuss chemotherapeutic agents that target enzymes in the nucleotide biosynthetic pathways
LO6 Describe the biosynthesis of principal membrane lipids
LO7 Outline cholesterol, lipoprotein and bile acid metabolism
LO8 Describe the interrelationships between the various metabolic pathways and understand their overall regulation
LO9 Proficiently perform laboratory experiments and record, analyse and evaluate data obtained.
