Module Description: This module introduces the student to domestic construction. It develops the students' knowledge and understanding of the construction processes in general and detailed terms. This module covers two storey domestic construction from site analysis from substructure to superstructure.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

Indicative Content
Site Analysis and Set up
Site visit, building on hazardous ground, dealing with trees, ensuring good foundations, site drainage, sustainable development.
Substructure
Foundation, rising walls, support to foundation trenches, Health & Safety, building regulations.
Superstructure - Floors
Solid ground supported floors and suspended timber ground floors. Suspended timber upper floors. Best practice.
Superstructure - Walls
External and internal, load bearing and non-load bearing walls. Openings in walls, cills and lintels, damp-proof courses, partitions and linings. Use of sustainable methodologies.
Roofs
Pitched roofs and flat roofs, cold deck, warm deck. Roof coverings and roof defects. Health & Safety. Building regulations.
