Module Description: The final year Design Project is undertaken by all students, and is a "capstone" project for the course. This module is concerned with specialised, focused detailed design of unit operations within a chemical, pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical manufacturing process, undertaken by an individual student, while simultaneously working as part of a group engaged in the wider design process. Within the confines of a module, students must solve complex problems and make sound judgements in the absence of complete data.

On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

Indicative Content
Detailed design and evaluation of a separation/purification unit or a chemical/biochemical reactor
Detailed design and evaluation of a selected item such as chemical reactor, biochemical reactor, multicomponent distillation, absorption, adsorption, liquid-liquid extractor, crystalliser, chromatography column, membrane separator. Identification of reaction mechanism and separation basis. Evaluation of alternatives: process, operating conditions, equipment type. Use of heuristics for preliminary design and for design verification. Detailed calculation to consider standard and novel methodologies, ideal and non-ideal behaviour, parametric evaluation, optimisation of design in accordance with specified criteria. Pressure containment. Preparation of Equipment Data Sheet.
Detailed design and evaluation of a heat transfer unit
Detailed design and evaluation of a heat exchanger such as a process fluid heater, process fluid cooler, heat exchanger involving phase change, evaporator. Evaluation of alternative configurations. Application of standard and novel methodologies. Use of appropriate software tools to design and rate the unit. Use of heuristics as preliminary design and checks on outcomes. Integration of heat and mass transfer operations. Preparation of Heat Transfer Unit Data Sheet.
Control and Operating Strategy
Development of an operating strategy for start-up, shut-down and normal operation of a selected unit operation. Development and evaluation of a control strategy and P&ID for a selected unit operation. Operating envelope, safety implications of operation and deviations from normal conditions. Dynamic simulation. Loss of containment considerations. Decomposition or reaction runaway concerns.
