Module Description: The students will develop an understanding of spatial data and will use GIS software for visualization. The student will learn to create geospatial maps in 2D and 3D from tabular data and images. They will perform basic spatial analysis, network analysis, and multicriteria analysis, and will use google earth into GIS platform.

On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO2 Combine open-access spatial data from Irish and global sources to develop high-resolution georeferenced maps.
LO3 Use spatial analysis tools to perform basic calculations at spatial scale.

LO5 Perform Multicriteria and Network Analysis to solve engineering problems.

Indicative Content
Introduction to GIS software
Becoming familiar with a chosen GIS software, loading raster and vector data to the GIS platform and preparing spatial maps; loading and integrating non-spatial data to vector data files using GIS, and developing GIS maps from tabular data.
Georeferencing
Adding geographic information to maps that do not have any spatial information using georeferencing; developing vector files from scanned images.
Working with Irish Data
Integrating different Irish data obtained from the Central Statistics Office and Geological Survey Ireland to generate time evolution maps.
Introduction to Spatial Analysis Tool
Using spatial analyst tools to perform basic analysis such as interpolation and buffering.
Interchange data between GIS and Google Earth/Maps
Exporting and importing data from Google Earth and Google Maps to GIS platform and vice versa. Using Google Earth to develop georeferenced maps.
3D visualization
Developing 3D maps and animation videos in GIS software.
Multicriteria Analysis using Graphical Modeler
Performing multicriteria analysis for decision making using the graphical modeler automation algorithm in GIS software.
Network Analysis
Performing network analysis in GIS to identify shortest route between two points in a road network, both in terms of distance and travel time.
