Module Description: This module gives the student on understanding of the importance of agri business in the Irish economy. It is an introduction to preparing accounts. The student will have the ability to construct and interpret accounts, source credit, evaluate borrowing capacity and predict repayment capacity of a business.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Appraise the importance of microeconomics to the agricultural and horticultural industry
LO2 Examine the importance of key financial records, uses and organisation of financial documentation
LO3 Maintain and complete basic financial records for a small business, including basic ratio analysis and bank reconciliation statements
LO4 Construct accounts for a small business incorporating adjustments for inventory, depreciation, prepayments and accruals

Indicative Content
Microeconomics of agricultural and horticultural industry
Introduction to microeconomics, consumers and utility, market demand, market supply, market equilibrium, Elasticity, Factors of production, costs of production and profit maximisation, market structures
Key Financial Records
Reasons for maintenance of key financial records, uses of financial records, organising of business office and organisation procedures for dealing with financial documents
Completion of Bank Reconciliation Statements
Preparing cash and bank records, culminating in the preparation of bank reconciliation statements
Accounting indicators and ratios
Understanding and analysis of key financial ratios and indicators including, gross profit, gross output, gross margin, net worth, Profit, loss, assets and liabilities
Preparation of basic financial statements
Preparation of basic Income Statements and Balance Sheets, including adjustments for inventory, depreciation, accruals and prepayments
