Module Description: This module will provide the learners with a deeper understanding of the various uses of art and sand in Play Therapy. The experiential element of this module will focus the students on their own therapeutic experience of the creative mediums through a number of workshops using different modalities. Insights into their personal and group process will be examined through reflective practice skills and a reflective assignment.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Critically engage with the key concepts and theory underpinning the use of creative mediums in Play Therapy and show critical awareness of the application of the associated techniques into non-directive play therapy practice with children and adolescents.
LO2 Appraise the theory and knowledge of creative mediums by designing a therapeutic playroom space for designated specific populations, using the power of creative mediums to facilitate unconscious communication.
LO3 Evaluate the significance of metaphors, symbols and archetypes in their own personal process and critically analyse their application in play therapy practice.
LO4 Integrate fully in the group process and critically reflect and evaluate on one's personal experiences in the group workshops.
LO5 Analyse and reflect on the relationship of one's experiential process to clinical practice as a play therapist working with children, adolescents and parents.

Indicative Content
Creative techniques and skills in Play Therapy.
Mandalas common colour associations. Clay and its application in play therapy. Art and development of art and print making with children, power of the image, right brain expression. Sand - the significance of the first tray, Jung and key concepts of Jungian sand play therapy including symbols- how they can used for healing, transformation, creativity and inspiration; collective unconscious, shadow, archetypes, anima and the animus. Metaphors - Metaphors and neuroscience, metaphors in therapy, metaphors in play therapy with children.
Self reflection and evaluation
Through a process journal the students will develop their personal awareness of both conscious and unconscious process that are necessary for their development as a Non-Directive Play Therapist. Creative Journal techniques -such as Mandala's will be explored. Congruence, Reflective practice and Self-Care are cornerstones of professional safe clinical practice.
Playroom
Prepare a therapeutic playroom space for specific populations that facilitate expression of unconscious process and non-verbal communication.

Assessment Description
Project based on designing a creative therapeutic space for a specific population, that integrates the theory and practice of creative therapies to facilitate unconscious expression in weekly sessions.

Assessment Description
Reflective assignment that will clearly demonstrate the students' critical reflective skills, their use of theory and reflective practice to analyse their personal development, their personal process to others and the creative mediums.
