Module Description: This module is designed to introduce students to the fundamentals of pharmacology. The module is aimed at familiarisng students with how drugs act, where they act, how they reach the site of action, how drug actions are terminated, and how such knowledge can be applied to achieve drug selectivity.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Discuss how the chemistry and structure of drugs and chemicals determine their biological properties.
LO2 Discuss the biochemical principles underlying the role of second messengers in determing the function and fate of an agonist or antagonist.
LO3 Evaluate experimental data in a critical manner.
LO4 Perform safely pharmacological experimental techniques, recording and analysing data generated using appropriate techniques.
LO5 Apply a critical analytical approach to scientific enquiry.
LO6 Use computer-aided learning and database resources, and utilise the internet to access information.

Indicative Content
Lectures
Drug nomenclature, drug receptors and intracellular messengers, synaptic pharmacology, ion channels, pharmacokinetics, drug interactions, adrenergic and cholinergic pharmacology, dose response relationships, drug antagonism and synergism.
Practical Skills
Calculate concentrations, molarities and volumes required in making solutions and standards. Generate pharmacological data and analyse and interpret results. Estimation of precision and accuracy of experimental results.
