Module Description: This module introduces the student to the principles of the analytical techniques employed in the biomedical and life science laboratory. It describes the instrumentation involved and the application of the techniques in the biomedical and life science environment.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Explain the principles of analytical techniques employed in clinical laboratories.
LO2 Outline the clinical applications of the various analytical techniques.
LO3 Perform experiments using a variety of analytical instruments and generate laboratory reports.
LO4 Perform data handling exercises that assess analytical performance.
LO5 Recognise, manage, and contain the different hazards encountered in clinical laboratories and apply the appropriate Health & Safety procedures.

Analytical performance
Accuracy, precision, data handling and quality control.
Optical Techniques
Principles of spectrophotometry and its application to analysing biological samples.
Electrochemistry and Chemical Sensors
Ion selective electrodes and blood gas analysers.
Separation techniques
Principles of electrophoresis (conventional, capillary) and chromatography.
Clinical Enzymology
Enzymes as analytical tools to assess pathological changes and measure biologically relevant metabolites.
Immunochemical Techniques
Use of antibodies and related reagents for selective determination of target analytes. Assay formulations and reporter labels.
Point of Care Testing
Near patient testing, technology and clinical management.
