Module Description: This module introduces the structure and functions of the different organ systems of the body. The module outlines the anatomical location of the major components of each organ and provides an opportunity for the students to research clinical disorders associated with the main organ systems of the body.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Describe the anatomical structure and components of the different organ systems
LO2 Outline the major functions of the different organ systems.
LO3 Analyse organ function and physiological parameters in the laboratory.
LO4 Research, prepare and present on disorders of selected organ systems.
LO5 Recognise, manage, and contain the different hazards encountered in clinical laboratories and apply the appropriate Health & Safety procedures.

Skeletal System
Bone tissue, composition of bone, formation of bone tissue, types of bone, the human skeleton.
Nervous System
Architecture of the nervous system. Nervous impulses. Neurotransmitters. Types of nerve cells.
Muscular System
Structure and function of muscle tissue, skeletal muscle, smooth muscle and cardiac muscle.
Cardiovascular System
Basic design of the circulatory system, blood, heart and blood vessels, cardiac function.
Respiratory System
Structure of the upper and lower respiratory system. Gaseous exchange. Breathing mechanism. Monitoring respiratory function.
Digestive System
Structure of the digestive system, organs of the digestive tube, accessory digestive organs. Digestive function.
Urinary System
Structure and function of urinary system, nephrons, the kidneys, the excretory passages.
Reproductive System
Male and female reproductive systems. Sperm production. Menstrual cycle. Hormonal regulation.
Endocrine System
Hormones, hormone function, mechanisms of hormone action, overview of an endocrine system.
