Module Description: This module will focus on developing the critical skills related to understanding how coaching is both a science and an art i.e. an 'artful science'). Students will learn how to evaluate and implement the findings from research and the lessons from experience as they develop an evidence-based, experiential philosophy.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Review scientific literature from the coaching science domain to determine models of best principles and practice in the applied setting, so as to contribute to the development of a more considerate and reflective practitioner.
LO2 Categorise and apply information and experience from non-coaching domains such as business, arts and industry for the improvement of coach-athlete engagement.
LO3 Develop an evolving coaching philosophy that reflects the generation of new evidence and new experiences that enable improved behaviours to emerge.
LO4 Understand the importance of mentoring and the development of a network within a community of coaching practice.
LO5 Conduct a functional analysis of different approaches to coaching across domains within the sporting landscape and skills continuum.

Indicative Content
Critical Analysis
Develop an understanding of the importance of having the capacity to review content and behaviours in practice activities (coaches and player-led environments) in the domain of coaching through a critical lens. This includes behavioural skills such as interrogative questioning, task facilitation, and employment of video analysis, i.e., acquiring skills in the application of artful science.
Reflective Practice
Engage in the theoretical principles and practical use of reflective practice as a tool for the development of a coaching philosophy across the lifespan of a coaching career. This work will lead to becoming a reflective practitioner in other complementary capacities such as academic pursuits. Reflective practice to explore how 'you' coach versus how a peer or role model may coach - there are many different ways to coach. The role of the environment (i.e. culture) and setting in this context.
Mentorship & Network
Discuss the importance of a mentor and how to develop a network of peers to expand your thinking and challenge your principles. Engage in mentor-mentee activities to provide experience expectations of the roles. Explore the relationship between the world of coaching and that of business, arts and industry for the improvement of coach-athlete engagement.
Additive Contributions
Examine the processes of engaging in content in a manner that adds to the future development of the discussion, thereby learning about the skills of the promotion of ideas. This aspect will encourage a broadening of perspectives for more generalised thinking and the merging of knowledge from domains such as philosophy and anthropology.
