Module Description: This module is an introduction to the practical elements of information technology. It covers
computer hardware and the software packages of word-processing, spreadsheets and
presentations. The use of e-mail and the internet is also covered.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

Indicative Content
Basic concepts of Information Technology
Hardware, software, memory, storage, networks, IT and society, IT security, potential areas of risk.
Using the Computer and Managing Files
Windows environment, managing and organising files and folders, renaming, saving, finding, deleting files and folders. Network drives. Printing.
Information and Communication
Use of internet browsers, search engines, URLs, e-mail, attachments, address books.
Word Processing
Formatting and editing of documents, Word tools, layout, graphics, tables, mail merge, templates.
Presentation
Creation of slide shows, colour design and background, slide layouts, graphics, charts, objects, diagrams, multimedia.
Spreadsheets
Creation of spreadsheets, formatting, use of absolute and relative formulas, functions, data sorting, multiple sheets, use of graphs/charts.
