Module Recommendations

This is prior learning (or a practical skill) that is strongly recommended before enrolment in this module. You may enrol in this module if you have not acquired the recommended learning but you will have considerable difficulty in passing (i.e. achieving the learning outcomes of) the module. While the prior learning is expressed as named MTU module(s) it also allows for learning (in another module or modules) which is equivalent to the learning specified in the named module(s).

Incompatible Modules
These are modules which have learning outcomes that are too similar to the learning outcomes of this module. You may not earn additional credit for the same learning and therefore you may not enrol in this module if you have successfully completed any modules in the incompatible list.

Indicative Content
Research Ethics
Development of a detailed proposal consisting of the research questions, ethical considerations, an overview of literature and methodological approach.
Research Integrity
Ensure the research process adheres to best practice in relation to research integrity. The research approach adopted will be in agreement with Policy Statement on Ensuring Research Integrity in Ireland (2019). Core principles relating to reliability, honesty, respect and accountability will be promoted throughout the research process.
Review of relevant literature
The students will be required to conduct extensive independent review of research including a thorough analysis of relevant peer reviewed scientific research relating to their chosen topic. The students will be required to display a high standard of writing with a good quality of expression and clarity. Students will conduct systematic searches of relevant databases e.g. SportsDiscus to source recent relevant scientific literature pertinent to the research topic.
Methodology
Students will submit a comprehensive methodology detailing the participant selection, experimental design, data collection methods, data analysis. The methodological approach needs to be justified based on relevant previous literature. This will involve relevant qualitative and/or qualitative data collection methods as appropriate to the research design.
Descriptive results
Students will collate, analyse and present descriptive data relating to the research. Means, standard deviation and frequency statistics are examples of the type of analysis being conducted in this phase of the research.
Supervision support
Students will complete this research phase while on Placement. Regular support and mentoring will be provided by their MTU supervisor who will mentor and guide the student through the research process. As part of this research process it is expected that students will collect data that will be used in Phase 2 of the research process in Semester 2.
