Module Description: This module develops and extends a learner's knowledge of domestic, low-rise residential and small-scale framed construction in order to gain a deeper understanding of particular methods of construction.

On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Describe the purpose and functional attributes of a range of building forms and elements.
LO2 Identify and justify the selection of an appropriate substructure solution for a variety of building and site types.
LO3 Select and describe an appropriate flooring solution for a range of domestic, low-rise residential and small-scale framed buildings.
LO4 Justify the multiplicity of walling options available and indicate the advantages and disadvantages of each.
LO5 Explain the characteristics of a range of alternatives to the traditional site-constructed pitched timber roof structure.

The nature of building. Building as a process. Forms of construction on and off-site. Structural concepts. Functional requirements of the building fabric. Choice of materials. Building regulations. Controls and global sustainability issues.
Substructure including basements
Factors which affect foundation choice. Soil investigation. Piled foundations. Setting out foundations. Excavation of foundations. Concrete in foundations. Reinforcement. Domestic basements. Health, safety and welfare.
Floors
Definition and functional requirements. Suspended concrete floors. Inverted T and block floors. Composite floors. Cassette floors.
Walls
Wall types and functional requirements. Timber frame. Steel frame. SIPs. In-situ concrete walls. Permanent insulated formwork. Proprietary partition systems. Party walls. Parapet walls. Retaining walls.
Roof structure and coverings
Functional requirements. Trussed rafters. Hipped and mansard roofs. Flat roofs. Condensation and ventilation. Breathing roofs.
