Module Description: This module aims to allow the student to examine and evaluate the overall process within which buildings are conceived, designed, and evaluated. The focus is primarily on the pre-construction phases of the development process, although there may be some reference ot the construction phase.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO2 Evaluate the appropriateness of a site(s) for development.
LO3 Assess the critical issues in relation to the feasibility of a development.
LO4 Justify the selection of a development.
LO5 Evaluate relevant location factors regarding viability.
LO6 Recommend the methodology for ensuring the successful completion of the Project Evaluation & Development.
LO7 Integrate relevant areas of conceptual project management and demonstrate the overall management of development and construction processes.
LO8 Use problem solving exercises as a focus for a logical and analytical approach to multi-disciplinary and multi-dimensional development programmes.

Student choice
Student to select two of the assessed areas which are applicable to the chosen development and which reflect the total development process.
Assessed area A - Selection and measurement of site.
Comparative study, justify specific site, selection reasons, significant factors.
Assessed area B - Initial appraisal and review of alternative development possibilities
Potential developments, comprehensive review, feasibility of developments, justification of selection, sustainability.
Assessed area C - Economic analysis.
Design stage functions, potential methods, justification of selected method, complete economic analysis.
Assessed area D - Acceptability of proposals in the light of the planner's attitude to the site.
Planning theory for area and site, local planning policy, exhaustive study, specific problems to site, building control.
Assessed area E -Selection of method for carrying out design and construction.
Global view of procurement, alternative systems, application to specific development. Building form strategy.
Assessed area F - Briefing of the design team.
Specific client organisation, briefing process, production of brief.
