Module Description: This module aims to give the student a comprehensive introduction to industry standard methods for communicating engineering design intent. Learners will gain practical knowledge of the use of relevant 2D/3D digital modelling tools while they will also develop hand sketching techniques. The student will be expected to produce both a hardcopy and a digital portfolio, comprising hand sketches, 3D models, drawings and/or other appropriate media.

On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO2 Develop 3D parametric models of components and/or buildings using industry standard digital tools.
LO3 Produce 2D/3D annotated hand sketches/drawings.

LO5 Produce a hardcopy portfolio conveying engineering requirements graphically.

Indicative Content
Hand sketching/drawing
Using techniques to develop conversational sketches, sectional, isometric and perspective sketches/drawings for components/systems intrinsic to buildings and/or elements of infrastructure. Sketches may be presented as isolated or combined in philosophy/storyboard form.
Introductory 2-D Drawings
Generate 2-D drawings with industry standard digital tools using draw and modify tools. Use of model and paper space.
3-D parametric modelling - basic components
Develop basic solid models involving sketching a profile, setting dimensions and constraints, basic features e.g. extrude, revolve, holes, chamfer, pattern features etc.
3-D parametric modelling - basic building structure
Develop a model of a basic building using grids, levels, elements and imported component families.
File Management
Utilise a structured file management system to manage the storage and retrival of files.
Portfolio
Generate a portfolio of 2D and 3D drawings, dimensioned and printed to scale on an appropriate template.
