Module Details

Module Code: INTR6021
Title: 3D Built Environment Modelling
Long Title: 3D Built Environment Modelling
NFQ Level: Fundamental
Valid From: Semester 1 - 2019/20 ( September 2019 )
Duration: 1 Semester
Credits: 5
Field of Study: 5213 - Interdisciplinary Engineering
Module Delivered in: 7 programme(s)
Module Description: This module will demonstrate the practical application of 3D digital modelling in the development of the built environment. Learners will gain practical knowledge of the use of relevant 3D modelling software applications. Quality management skills will also be developed as learners are required to manage project work within a structured local/cloud based repository.

Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
# Learning Outcome Description
LO1 Prepare 3D parametric model(s) of a building.
LO2 Produce 2D annotated drawings from a 3D model.
LO3 Produce and manage schedules of specific elements within the 3D model.
LO4 Manage file storage and retrieval within a Local/Cloud based repository in accordance with best practice in industry.
LO5 Produce a digital portfolio of key aspects of the 3D model

Module Recommendations

This is prior learning (or a practical skill) that is strongly recommended before enrolment in this module. You may enrol in this module if you have not acquired the recommended learning but you will have considerable difficulty in passing (i.e. achieving the learning outcomes of) the module. While the prior learning is expressed as named MTU module(s) it also allows for learning (in another module or modules) which is equivalent to the learning specified in the named module(s).

Incompatible Modules
These are modules which have learning outcomes that are too similar to the learning outcomes of this module. You may not earn additional credit for the same learning and therefore you may not enrol in this module if you have successfully completed any modules in the incompatible list.
No incompatible modules listed

Requirements

This is prior learning (or a practical skill) that is mandatory before enrolment in this module is allowed. You may not enrol on this module if you have not acquired the learning specified in this section.

Indicative Content
Introduction
Overview of 3D parametric digital modelling and its application with the Architecture, Engineering, Construction (AEC) sector, including supporting Building Information Modelling (BIM) methodologies. Brief review of available 3D modelling software applications relevant to the built environment.
3D Digital Model Development
The following is indicative of tasks undertaken using Autodesk Revit or equivalent modelling software: Create and save project files; Create and edit levels and grids; Generate, name and manage model views; Understand visibility graphics; Model building components/elements (e.g. floors, walls, structural elements, etc.) and specify appropriate instance and type properties; Load and place families.
3D Digital Model Outputs
The following is indicative of tasks undertaken using Autodesk Revit or equivalent modelling software: Generate 2D drawings and associated schedules where appropriate; Develop camera views and video walkthroughs; Produce 2D and 3D digital softcopy files using Bluebeam or equivalent; Produce hardcopy portfolio suitable for third party consultation.
File Managment
Effective file management is central to modern quality management systems. File management will be completed in accordance with recognised national/international standards (e.g. BS 1192:2007+A1 2015).
