Module Description: This module introduces learners to the construction industry with particular emphasis on the construction management profession and the procedures affecting this profession.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Identify the types of contracting firms in the construction industry and outline the services that they provide.
LO2 Interpret and understand the various types of clients and their requirements of the construction industry.
LO3 Articulate the roles and responsibilities of the various types of design consultants and contractors within the construction industry.
LO4 Outline the principles of measurement and complete measurement of basic construction works from a construction management perspective.
LO5 Describe the role of professional bodies, with particular reference to the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB).

Types of construction management organisations
Types of construction management firms operating within the construction industry as sole trader practices, partnerships and companies.
Participants who operate within the industry
Construction Industry Federation, clients, design team consultants, main contractors, subcontractors and trades unions.
Roles and responsibilities
Construction manager, project manager, architect, quantity surveyor, building surveyor, planners, clerk of works, facilities manager.
Sectors in the industry
Private and public development, planning, design and architecture, construction, Health and Safety, estates and facilities management.
Principles of Measurement and techniques used in measurement
Types of software available, use of dimension sheets, use of measurement techniques and principles in taking off quantities.
Measurement of basic structures
Use of methods of measurement with particular emphasis on ARM in generating descriptions, measurement up to substructures.
