Module Description: This module expands on the cultural and social content covered in the preceding module 'Working with French' by looking at French overseas territories, the Francophone world and the OIF (Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie). Professional interactions are foregrounded in the oral and written French aspects of the module (meeting business contacts, making and receiving phone calls, leaving messages, exchanging contact details, composing basic emails, and making basic accommodation and other business enquiries).
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Read, discuss and respond in written form to questions about authentic texts on topics including businesses and companies in French-speaking countries and territories.
LO2 Write messages, short emails and extended paragraphs in French on relevant topics.
LO3 Speak in the present, future and past tenses and show evidence of descriptive skills such as the use of verbs of perception, adjectives, adverbs and discussing thoughts, perceptions and hypotheses..
LO4 Listen and respond to French conversations or short reports on relevant topics.
LO5 Discuss the regions beyond metropolitan France where French is spoken.

Indicative Content
Cultural studies
La Francophonie (the French-speaking world) and the International Organisation of Francophonie. Introduction to overseas French territories and regions around the world where French is spoken.
Listening
AV resources to practice listening skills and comprehension.
Speaking skills
Group and paired work on role plays dealing with typical everyday interactions and simple professional interactions such as making phone calls, leaving and taking messages, etc.
Writing skills
Writing short answers, simple emails and longer paragraphs in French with attention to relevant aspects of grammar and syntax (use of appropriate verb tenses, register, agreement of verbs and adjectives, etc.)
Reading skills
Reading authentic texts in French (e.g. short media articles, samples of professional emails, etc.).
Grammar and vocabulary
Knowledge of grammar and practical application e.g. present, and future tenses of regular and irregular verbs and building on vocabulary knowledge in topics covered during lectures and labs.
