Module Description: This module expands students working knowledge of French language and grammar in use (introducing a larger range of tenses and moods, use of pronouns, relative pronouns, prepositions, adverbs, reported speech, etc.) to build towards a level of linguistic competence approaching B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). It also builds on students' knowledge of contemporary French culture and includes selected topics associated with 20th century History. Students will work with films and works of art and literature including extracts from novels, selected short stories and poems.

On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Engage with contemporary life in France through film, video clips, archive footage and selected texts.
LO2 Comprehend, interpret and/or translate authentic materials in French such as business and informal conversations, film reviews, email correspondence, etc. to intermediate level.
LO3 Write extended paragraphs, projects, emails and reports in French using a variety of past, present and future tenses, the conditional and imperative moods, etc. and showing awareness of formal and informal registers in French and ability to judge when to apply different registers.
LO4 Comprehend a reasonably complex level of spoken French in everyday and professional business contexts.
LO5 Speak French in intermediate contexts including a variety of tenses, moods, and covering a range of everyday and familiar specialised topics.

Indicative Content
Cultural Studies
Research economic and business aspects of France and Francophone countries in Europe.
Listening skills
Working with AV resources on dealing with contemporary society, current affairs and topics relevant to the international business sector. Using AV resources to work on grammar in practice.
Speaking skills
Group and paired role plays and discussions in class.
Reading skills
Reading authentic texts in French which demonstrate a reasonable level of complexity and include exposure to a widening range of general and specialized vocabulary.
Writing skills
Writing extended paragraphs, email correspondence and other texts in French and expanding the range and complexity of topics covered with suitable attention to relevant grammar topics and the acquisition and use of appropriate new vocabulary.
Grammar
Reinforcement of key aspects of grammar such as structure and use of past tenses, use of moods (imperative, conditional), identifying and using reported speech, function and use of pronouns, adverbs and other relevant grammar topics.

Research an assigned task and produce a number of professional and semi-informal written documents associated with the task e.g. researching a hypothetical class trip to attend an international trade show in France; compiling a suggested trip itinerary; an email to students to accompany it, and a professional email to a French business e.g. a hotel inquiring about various practical aspects of organising the trip.
