Module Description: As the challenges of matching supply and demand have increased steadily due to the increasingly global environment many firms are operating in, the necessity for a single paradigm for understanding the flow of material, information and cash has become paramount. Decreasing levels of vertical integration show an increased willingness on the part of organisations not only to adopt different supply-chain models, but to change the existing model rapidly as internal and external factors vary. The awareness of the supply-chain as an element of overall global strategy together with the reward for accurately making timely management decisions are core capabilities of the modern firm.
This module explores the operational and strategic challenges of supply chain management general and aviation specific. It provides students with a holistic understanding of the dynamics and integrated components of supply chains and to enhance their ability to contribute to supply chain improvement and performance enhancement within their own organisations. Importantly, the student must be able to reconcile academic concepts and theories with supply-chain praxis- i.e. to ground contemporary issues in the extant literature.

LO5 Critically assess the effectiveness of a given supply-chain strategy through the application of supply-chain performance measurement frameworks.
LO6 Evaluate the effect of the risk, resilience, product quality, ethics and environmental approaches on the decision-making process within a supply-chain.

The evolution of logistics and supply chain management. Supply chain activities and the supply chain mix (buy make, move store and sell). The fundamentals of supply chain management. Global supply chain relationships. Challenges and obstacles to an effective global supply chain. Recent supply chain trends globally. Lean and agile supply chains. Outsourcing.
The Procurement Function
Procurement design, reporting, communication in purchasing, purchasing documentation, e-procurement & reverse auctions, aviation B2B e-Marketplaces, supplier network development.
Information and Communication Technology in Supply Chain Management
Information planning and control; the importance of information, and how the information flow should be managed. Information for strategic supply chain decisions. The application of SC information management systems: EDI, e-commerce, ERP systems, Data Warehouse, Decision Support Systems.
Operations management
Inventory Management & Forecasting. Logistics network design for global operations. Risk and resilience in global operations. The importance of total quality management.
Future challenges facing the supply chain
Sustainable supply chain management. Reverse logistics. Ethics and corporate social responsibility in designing supply chains.
SCM in practice
