Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Describe the chemical industry and identify the distinguishing features of its component parts.
LO2 Identify the key factors involved in the process of chemical production and explain their importance.
LO3 Describe the industrial production of selected important organic and inorganic chemicals including polymers.
LO4 Evaluate health, safety and environmental issues including solvent use and waste mininmisation pertaining to the chemical industry.

Indicative Content
The Chemical Industry
The Irish chemical industry, company organisation and structure, fine chemical and bulk chemical production, biotechnology, bench vs. industrial scale processes, roles of the chemist in the industry.
The Process of Chemical Production
Chemical feedstock materials, reaction suitability, reaction thermodynamics, reaction yield efficiency and conversion, process flow diagrams, mass balancing and energy balancing calculations, costings process stream monitoring, optimisation of reactor conditions, catalyst selection, unit operations e.g. filtration, distillation, crystallisation, drying.
Organic and Inorganic Chemical Production
The manufacture of selected organic and inorganic chemicals.
Oil Products
Crude Oil Refining, Natural and synthetic polymers from oil, thermal and catalytic cracking.
Solvents
Categories of solvents, solvent recovery, hazards of solvent use, minimisation and/or elimination of solvent use.
Health, Safety and Environment
Exposure to chemicals, environmental impact of chemical production, waste and waste minimisation, effluent treatment, use of water, water treatment programmes, air quality, clean room technologly, sterile environments.
