Module Recommendations

This is prior learning (or a practical skill) that is strongly recommended before enrolment in this module. You may enrol in this module if you have not acquired the recommended learning but you will have considerable difficulty in passing (i.e. achieving the learning outcomes of) the module. While the prior learning is expressed as named MTU module(s) it also allows for learning (in another module or modules) which is equivalent to the learning specified in the named module(s).

Incompatible Modules
These are modules which have learning outcomes that are too similar to the learning outcomes of this module. You may not earn additional credit for the same learning and therefore you may not enrol in this module if you have successfully completed any modules in the incompatible list.
No incompatible modules listed
Co-requisite Modules
No Co-requisite modules listed
Requirements

This is prior learning (or a practical skill) that is mandatory before enrolment in this module is allowed. You may not enrol on this module if you have not acquired the learning specified in this section.

No requirements listed

Indicative Content
Food Analysis
This section of the module links analytical chemistry with the laws and regulations pertinent to the food sector.
Regulations
Regulatory standards relevant to the analyst. For example, reference to 2002/657/EC (performance of analytical methods and the interpretation of results); COUNCIL DIRECTIVE 96/23/EC (measures to monitor certain substances and residues in live animals and animal products); Regulation (EC) No 1881/2006 setting maximum levels for dangerous contaminants in foodstuffs and Regulation (EC) No 401/2006 laying down the methods of sampling and analysis for the official control of the levels of mycotoxins in foodstuffs.
Sample Preparation and Instrumental Methods
Techniques for sample extraction and for the preparation of test samples. Instrumental techniques for the analysis of food, feed, food constituents, additives and food contaminants.
Environmental Chemistry
This section of the module links analytical chemistry with the laws and regulations pertinent to the environmental sector.
Regulations
Regulatory bodies, Regulatory standards relevant to the environmental area. For example, the Ambient Air Quality and Cleaner Air for Europe (CAFE) Directive (2008/50/EC) and Directive 2000/60/EC-Water Framework Directive) and licensing.
Industrial Hygiene
Health and Safety Law (Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Acts 2005 and 2010). Indoor monitoring of organics, inorganics and particulates.
Ambient Air, Water and Industrial Monitoring
Sampling strategies and analytical methods for regulated contaminants.
Pharmaceutical Analysis
This section of the module links analytical chemistry with the laws and regulations pertinent to the pharmaceutical sector.
Regulations
Regulatory standards relevant to the analyst. For example, reference to: Q2(R1) - Validation parameters for Analytical Methods; Q1A(R2) - Stability testing of new Drug Substances and Products; Q1B - Photostability testing of new Drug Substances and Products; Q6A - Test Procedures and Acceptance Criteria for new Drug Substances and New Drug Products.
Chromatographic and Spectroscopic Analysis of BioPharma products
Liquid chromatography (LC) and spectroscopic methods in the quantitative analysis of Biopharmaceuticals, Stability studies, Causes, evaluation, solutions and monitoring of Ion Suppression samples matrix effects. Bioequivalence and Bioavailability.
