Module Description: This module examines the nature globalisation and the role of transnational corporations in international trade. The political, legal, cultural, and technological aspects of the international business environment are examined. Frameworks for establishing the attractiveness of markets as destinations for foreign direct investment are assessed along with an evaluation of the various modes of entry to international markets. Ethical issues that impact on international business will also be considered.

On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO2 Analyse the key political, legal, economic, technological and socio-cultural factors that affect firms seeking to internationalise.

LO4 Critically evaluate the various entry modes to international markets which are available to the internationalising firm.
LO5 Assess the impact of ethics and social responsibility on international business activities.

Globalisation defined. Global Institutions, Factors contributing to globalisation. Drivers of globalisation. Environmental change and globalisation. The challenges of the Internet Age.
Socio-Economic Forces
Sociocultural components and guidelines, importance of religion, attitudes, beliefs, education and language, cultural differences and change, behavioural factors influencing countries business practices, Hofstedeā€™s model.
Political Forces
Political systems, Government ownership of business, privatisation, nationalism, government protection, country risk assessment criteria.
Economic Forces
Economic analysis of foreign markets. Economic indicators of countries, Economic Freedom, transition process for economies. Major dimensions of international economic analysis.
Legal Forces
National legal forces, expropriation, confiscation and domestication. Intellectual Property Rights. International standardising forces. Legal systems and relationships. Jurisdiction in international business.
Country Evaluation and Selection
Researching international markets, screening opportunities, analysing foreign markets.
Selecting and Managing Entry Modes
Exporting, joint ventures licensing, franchising, strategic alliances and wholly owned subsidiaries.
Ethics and corruption in international business
Ethics in cross-cultural and international contexts. Managing ethical behaviour across borders. Codes of ethics.
