Module Description: This module further develops the theory and practice of selected instrumental analysis techniques such as electroanalytical, thermal and particle size analysis. It also provides practical experience with derivatisation and internal standardization methods used in instrumental analysis.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Critically assess the principles of operation of potentiometric and amperometric methods of analysis and the development of the corresponding sensor devices.
LO2 Interpret the principles of the most commonly used thermal analysis methods and evaluate their application in pharmaceutical analysis.
LO3 Apprise the role of particle sizing in the chemical/pharmaceutical industry and critically compare various sizing methods.
LO4 Critically comprehend lab experimental methods related to instrumental analysis.

Indicative Content
Electroanalytcial methods
Review of electrochemical principles. Electroanalytical methods: operation principles of potentiometric and amperometric techniques, quantifications using ion-selective electrodes (ISE).
Thermal Analysis
Thermogravimetry(TG),Differential Thermal Analysis(DTA), Differential Scanning Calorimetry(DSC)-principles,instrumentation,practice and application in anlysis of pharmaceutical products.
Particle size analysis
Particle sizing principles and modalities; sample preparation; spectroscopy and imaging methods for particle size analysis. Application of particle sizing in the pharmaceutical technology. Time, cost, on-line analysis, limitations.
Laboratory Practices
Selectivity of potentiometric analysis, pH effect on ISE analysis, differential scanning calorimetry for drugs analysis, automated electrochemcial titrations, particle size analysis of powdered samples, scanning electron microscopy of powdered samples, etc.
