On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

Indicative Content
Disorders of the immune system
Intoduction to the immune system and a brief overview of disorders such as acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, anaphylaxis, autoimmunity
Cardiovascular Disease
An overview of cardiovascular disease with an emphasis on risk factors contributing to the disease.
Cancer
Cancer and the nature of malignancy. Risk factors associated with certain cancers. Conventional and novel treatments.
Disorders of the gastrointestinal tract
An overview of disordes associated with disorders of the gastrointestinal tract. The associated risk factors and management of theses disorders. (Examples, Gastritis, Coeliac disease. Crohns disease, associated cancers)
Hepatic and Renal disorders
Hepatitis, cirrhosis, hepatic failure, renal disease and renal failure
Disorders of the Pancreas
An overview of disorders associated with the Pancreas. Pancreatitis, Diabetes, the Pancreas and Cystic Fibrosis.
Obesity
Definition of obesity, risk factors, role of Leptin, complications associated with obesity.
Antibiotic Resistant
Emergence of resistance, resistance mechanisms determinants, "superbugs" including MRSA (Methicillin-Resistance Staphylococcus aureus.
Prion Disease
Definition of Prion Disease. Types of Prion Disease in Humans; Sporadic, Inherited and acquired
Nutrition and Physical Activity
Nutrition and healthy eating, promoting heathy weight, the scientific benefits of physical acivity
