Module Description: This module gives the student an opportunity to further their theoretical understanding and consolidate theoretical links to their clinical practice. Thought is given to the nature of human development and its impact on emotional and psychological development and well being and the role Art/s Therapies have in addressing these needs within various client groupings.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Define a comprehensive understanding of Art Therapy theoretical development
LO2 Debate the wider cultural influences from allied professions and approaches to the clinical practice of Art Therapy
LO3 Systematically enquire into aspects of Art Therapy practice, theory and research using skills in literature search, retrieval and appraisal.
LO4 Detail and apply a critical awareness of psychological development and human pathology and its relationship to Art Therapy practice

Introduction to Dev Psychology, Biological development, Piaget's Theory, Vygotsky's social contextualism, Bruner's Cognitive Learning Theory,Erikson's Psychosocial stage
Research Methodologies
Ethical & professional issues of research within the Arts & Psychological Therapies. Qualitative and Quantative methods/ case study approaches
Theoretical papers
A series of theoretical papers covering Art Therapy practice are presented exploring issues of Psychodynamic thinking e.g Transference/ Triangular relationship in Art Therapy/ Directive and non directive approaches in Art Therapy
Art Therapy Theory Practice
Introduction to theoretical practice within a range of clinical practices inc, Psychiatry, Learning Disabilites, Education with both adults and children. Approaches to group work: closed/ open groups/ Theme centered and time directed groups.
Art as Therapy
Art within the wider social context and it's role as a 'Healing Art' as used within health contexts. Children's art development.
Disability Issues
An exporation of disability through social and medical models and their relationship to current thinking.
