Module Description: This module is an introduction to the primary concepts of Milk and Sheep Production. It will give a grounding to students wishing to pursue a career in agri-business and farm management.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO3 Describe the rearing of heifers from 12 weeks to mating.

Selection of breeds to meet market demands. Breeding strategies .Carcase Composition, quality and payment structure. Lamb conformation and fat score. Wool Markets. Market requirements.
Production Systems and Targets
Mid-season lamb, Early lamb, Hill lamb and calf rearing to 12 weeks. Sustainability of Sheep production
Grassland Management
Grassland management in Spring, Summer and Autumn. Sustainability of grassland production.
Replacement Heifers
Targets, Economics and Systems.
Tasks
