Module Details

Module Code: CIVL7035
Title: Land Surveying Data Capture
Long Title: Land Surveying Data Capture
NFQ Level: Intermediate
Valid From: Semester 1 - 2019/20 ( September 2019 )
Duration: 1 Semester
Credits: 5
Field of Study: 5822 - Civil Engineering
Module Delivered in: 3 programme(s)
Module Description: This module introduces the learner to topographic surveying for civil, structural and environmental engineering. The learner will complete the process of establishing and adjusting both basic and advanced field survey control. In addition, using digital surveying instruments along with advanced computer software, the learner will capture, critically evaluate and process digital field data.

Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
# Learning Outcome Description
LO1 Complete the establishment of field control including appraisal and adjustment, use this control to setup and orientate advanced survey instruments such as Total Station or GPS or Laser Scanner and use such instruments to complete field surveys.
LO2 Undertake fieldwork such as levelling, linear measuring and setting-out to produce reduced levels, contours, longitudinal sections and detail mapping. Complete computations and produce reports from field data such as levelling, mapping and setting-out.
LO3 Complete a written report to include surveying computations such as; levelling applications, area calculations from maps and coordinates, volume and mass haul diagrams, calculation of curve ranging setting out data and processing of captured digital field data.
LO4 Complete a specification for a simple topographic field survey. Evaluate and appreciate the principles of international survey standards such as ISO9001 and BS 7334-3:1990 / ISO 8322-3:1989 where applicable to field surveying, surveyor contractors and survey instruments.
LO5 Work as a member of a survey team to plan, manage and complete a field survey and produce a written report detailing fieldwork, observations, calculations and results for practical surveying applications.

Module Recommendations

This is prior learning (or a practical skill) that is strongly recommended before enrolment in this module. You may enrol in this module if you have not acquired the recommended learning but you will have considerable difficulty in passing (i.e. achieving the learning outcomes of) the module. While the prior learning is expressed as named MTU module(s) it also allows for learning (in another module or modules) which is equivalent to the learning specified in the named module(s).

Incompatible Modules
These are modules which have learning outcomes that are too similar to the learning outcomes of this module. You may not earn additional credit for the same learning and therefore you may not enrol in this module if you have successfully completed any modules in the incompatible list.
No incompatible modules listed

Requirements

This is prior learning (or a practical skill) that is mandatory before enrolment in this module is allowed. You may not enrol on this module if you have not acquired the learning specified in this section.
