In this module studens will be facilitated to develop an integrated understanding of the theory and application of clinical assessment,case formulation, treatment planning and delivery. They will apply this to a wide range of clinical issues and use it as a framework to analyse their practitioning.

LO1 |
Compile a problem formulation/case conceptualisation in the course of the assessment process;use this as a basis for conceptualising a treatment direction for the work and update these initial hypotheses regularly in response to the emergence of new material. |
LO2 |
Use a multi-axial system in client assessment and critically evaluate the use of such a system in the psychotherapy context |
LO3 |
Show a familiarity with a broad range of clinical issues and appropriate psychotherapeutic approaches
for working with them |
LO4 |
Show a developed understanding of unconscious process, transference, countertansference and
projective identification in the clinical process and use this to guide his/her clinical work |
LO5 |
Show a capable understanding of the complexity of ethical and professional issues that arise in clinical
work and develop a competent process for approaching ethical and professional decision making. |
LO6 |
Show a capable understanding of the impact of race, culture, religion, age, disability, sexual orientation,

Case Formulation
Use of case formulation framework to guide the client intake and history taking process as well as for overall psychotherapeutic assessment and treatment planning.

Multi-axial assessment system
Using of a multi-axial system (DSM-IV-TR or ICD-10) in client assessment and critical evaluation of the use of such a system in the psychotherapy context

Clinical Issues
Exploring a broad range of clinical issues (grief and loss, anxiety, depression, disorders of the self,
codependency and addiction, existential issues - meaninglessnes, aloneness, lonliness, death, freedom)
Exploring appropriate psychotherapeutic approaches for working with these.

Unconscious process
Reviewing clinical practice in the light of unconscious process, transference, countertansference and projective
identification

Ethical and professional practice
Exploring the complexity of ethical and professional issues that arise in clinical work and develop a process
for approaching ethical and professional decision making.
