In this module, students will be introduced to the principles and application of family systems theory. They will apply their learning to an analysis of their own family of origin.

Understanding Family Systems
Why counselling trainees study family of origin: how the past influences the present, transgenerational patterns, the theory of Murray Bowen, family structure. Characteristics of functional and dysfunctional families. Family cohesion and adaptability. The family life cycle. The family projection process. Enmeshment, differentiation, cut off, grief and loss.
