Module Description: In this module, students will be introduced to the principles and application of family systems theory. They will apply their learning to an analysis of their own family of origin.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO2 Describe how experiences from family of origin impact on adult functioning.
LO3 Review and analyse his/her own family of origin making explicit use of relevant concepts .
LO4 Identify the personal issues that arise for him/her relating to his/her experience in his/her family of origin.

Indicative Content
Understanding Family Systems
Why counselling trainees study family of origin: how the past influences the present, transgenerational patterns, the theory of Murray Bowen, family structure. Characteristics of functional and dysfunctional families. Family cohesion and adaptability. The family life cycle. The family projection process. Enmeshment, differentiation, cut off, grief and loss.
