Module Description: This module gives an understanding of the history and beginnings of Art Therapy as a profession and a practice, looking at it's relationship to Art and other disciplines. Particular reference is made to psychoanalysis and psychotherapeutic concepts and theories that have had a major influence on the development of Art Therapy.

On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Evaluate specific theoretical concepts from Psychodynamic and Psychotherapeutic thinking underpinning and influencing Art Therapy practice
LO2 Detail a critical understanding of the historical and philosophical context of Art Therapy
LO3 Critically reflect on Art Therapy theoretical writing and it's relationship and influence on Art Therapy practice
LO4 Apply appropriate research and information gathering methods to investigating theory and practice issues

Introduction to Psychotherapy
Introduction to the development of Pyschoanalytical Therapy and thinking through the work of Freud, Jung, Klein. Development of group therapy and the work of Bion & Foulkes, attachment theory.
Art Therapy History
Introduction to the development of Art Therapy history as a profession within Ireland and Europe. Theoretical developments of Art Therapy.
Art as Therapy
A specific look at the relationship of Art Therapy to Art and the wider cultural connections and relationship
Art Therapy Theory
An investigation of the theories underpining Art Therapy through the work of Winnicott and psychoanalytical thinking
Ethical and Professional Issues
An investigation in to the ethical and moral issues of therapy and the development of the professional association. Responsibilites of practitioners and the history and role of the professional association - IACAT
