Module Description: Recent trends in the Third Sector have meant that the Irish State (as elsewhere) requires greater accountability and transparency. In this context, effective management skills are of increasing importance to the community worker. This module explores management principles and practices in a theoretically-informed fashion. It includes inputs on funding, employment legislation as well as human resource (HR) issues.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Evaluate some of the key theoretical approaches, including feminist approaches, to the management of community and voluntary organisations
LO2 Critically review processes of funding and project management in community work
LO3 Analyse key employment related legislation as it relates to the Third Sector in Ireland
LO4 Evaluate competence in addressing key HR issues in the community work place
LO5 Reflect on the nature of effective management styles for community practice

Classical management theory, human relations theory, neo-human relations theory, system theory, feminist management theory.
Funding Sources
Ireland and EU initiatives - Statutory and Third Sector; funding applications: the use of web-based application process; Departmental reporting mechanisms.
Human Resource Management
Human resource management and the Irish legislative context; managing diversity; conflict resolution and managing volunteers.
Best Practice Human Resource Processes
Staffing; recruitment and selection; retention, communication; stress management.
