Module Description: |
The promotion of social justice in the context of both formal and substantive citizenship is a key aim of community work. In this module, the concept of social justice is explored in some depth across diverse theoretical and practice sites alongside their implications for community work.

Concepts and Theories
Conceptual and theoretical frameworks: historical overview of social justice and citizenship; historical specificity of their emergence; theories of inclusion; feminist perspectives on citizenship.

Social Inclusion - The Discourse
Social inclusion discourses: redistributive discourse, moral underclass discourse, social integrationist discourse.

Social Inclusion - The Practice
Understanding social exclusion: definitions and measurement- social inclusion/exclusion and social cohesion; processes and dynamics of social exclusion; material and cultural exclusions – ‘recognition’ and respect, discrimination and institutional discrimination.
