Module Description: This module deals with the structure and function of bio-molecules.It looks at the structure of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.The structures,organisation and functions of the major body tissues are described.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Recognise and describe the structure and function of the major biomolecules.(Proteins,Carbohydrates,Fats and Nucleic acids)
LO2 Explain the structure and function of eukaryotic cells and their organelles.
LO3 Describe the organisation of cells into various tissue types in the human body.
LO4 Explain the structure of prokaryotic cells.
LO5 Perform and report on laboratory experiments and understand the ethical, health and safety procedures appropriate for biological laboratories.

Indicative Content
Biomolecules
The structure and function of the important biomolecules (proteins, fats, carbohydrates and nucleic acids)
Eukaryotic Cells
The structure of a eukaryotic cell, the structure and function of a eukaryotic cells organelles.
Tissues
The structure and organisation of the major human tissue types including epithelial,connective,muscle and nervous tissue.
Prokaryotic Cells
An introduction to microorganisms including bacteria, fungi and viruses. The structure of prokaryotic cells. Microscopy associated with prokaryotic cells (Gram stain).
Laboratory Practicals
Laboratory practicals which supplement the lecture material will be carried out.
