Module Description: The module is designed to analyse the strategic importance of the entrepreneur and the problems faced by people who start their own business.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Analyse the strategic importance of the entrepreneur to job creation and the value of small business to the Irish economy.
LO2 Analyse the unique characteristics of those who start their own business vis a vis those who are employed by others.
LO3 Construct a comprehensive business plan. This will cover aspects of marketing, finance, human resources, etc.
LO4 Analyse the problems faced by entrepreneurs.
LO5 Analyse the key differences between male and female entrepreneurs.

The small business sector; Definition of entrepreneurship; Why has the rate of small business development been so low historically in Ireland?; Personal characteristics of entrepreneurs; Background characteristics and psychological variables; Intrapreneurship; Establishing an intrapreneurial spirit within the firm.
Stages of Business Start up
Stages involved in setting up a business; Developing ideas and business opportunities; Creativity; Incubation centres; Mentoring; Assistance; Networking.
Business Plans
Purpose and contents; Establish the scope of the business plan; Determine what type of business plan is appropriate; Steps involved in writing the plan; Location of investors and presentation.
Finance
Sources of finance; Early stage funding; Bank loans; Government funding; Venture capital; Informal venture capital and Business Angels.
Female Entrepreneurship
