Module Description: This module provides the student with a knowledge and understanding of complex construction technologies and techniques which are used in heavy civil, structural and environmental engineering projects. It also introduces the student to basic construction management techniques relevant to such projects, including financial and planning processes.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Evaluate methods to undertake deep excavation operations and identify suitable means of ground support for a deep excavation scheme
LO2 Demonstrate a full understanding of foundation options and evaluate the primary considerations in the selection process, and identify suitable foundation strengthening methods
LO3 Identify optimum methods for multi-storey structures, to include frames, walls, floors and roof systems, for residential, commercial and industrial structures
LO4 Describe and compare road construction processes and associated drainage scheme options, and identify the basis for suitable design solutions
LO5 Demonstrate an understanding of basic construction planning and programming techniques, and apply simplified measurement and estimating techniques to engineering processes

Foundations and factors influencing selection (including raft/pad foundations, short-bore piling and deep piling techniques). Underpinning

Flexible and rigid pavements. Construction methods. Drainage
Multi-Storey Structures
Choice of form of structure. Walls (masonry, reinforced concrete and cladding). Frames (steel, reinforced concrete, precast concrete)
Floors and Roofs
Choice and types of floors (timber, reinforced and precast concrete, composite forms). Functions and types of roofs. Factors affecting selection and possible causes of failure
Construction Planning and Programming
Site planning and layout. Planning and programming techniques
Measurement and Estimating
Introduction to measurement and use of standard methods of measurement. Classifications. Bills of quantities
