Module Description: This course provides an insight into engineering management by defining important elements of production systems and by outlining the responsibilities and problems encountered by the people that manage them. The focus is on operations and the central role they play in the success of an organisation.

On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

Operations, Operations Management, Value added, Competition, Quality, Teamwork. Types of Production Systems. Aspects of Lean Production.
Product/Service Design
Product Life Cycles. Stages in the design process. Design for Assembly/Manufacture.
Quality Systems
Define Quality. Design Versus Conformance Quality. Quality Functional Deployment. Conformance to Specification. Limitations of Inspection. Quality Circles. Continous Improvement. Benchmarking. Business Process re-engineering.
Reliability
Definition of reliability. Designing for reliability; Cost, Environmental factors, Human factors. Maintenance management. Life-history curve. Exponential Distribution, failure rates and MTBF. Failure mode and effect analysis (FMEA), Fault tree analysis.
Safety and Product liability
Health and Safety at Work act. Employers and Employee responsibilities. Manual and material handling. Product Safety and Liability: Product Representation, Traceability, Criminality and Personal liability
Project Management
Project life cycle, Basic PM tools (Work Breakdown Structure, Resource charts, Gantt charts, Network activity diagrams). Monitoring and controlling. Expediting.
Inventory Systems
Advantages and disadvantages of inventory. Dependent versus independent demand. Economic Order Quantity (EOQ) models; simple saw tooth, Production versus transfer lots, ‘with usage models’, price-break models. Estimating holding and set up costs. Purposes, objectives and philosophy of MRP. Master Production Schedule, Bill of Materials, Inventory records file. MRP outputs. MRP worked examples. Closed loop MRP. MRPII & ERP. Capacity Requirements Planning. Limitations of MRP.
Professional conduct & Communications
